AN ASSESSMENT OF WORK ENVIRONMENT AS A PREDICTOR OF EMPLOYEE PRODUCTIVITY IN BUSINESS ORGANIZATIONS IN CAMEROON

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

The term "environment" encompasses all surrounding elements that impact individuals throughout their lives. However, the working environment refers to the setting where individuals collaborate to achieve organizational goals. This encompasses the systems, processes, structures, and tools that interact with employees and can influence their performance positively or negatively (Ghafoor, 2019). It can also be understood as the physical location where work tasks are carried out. When examining a workplace, the work environment includes not only the physical geography but also the immediate surroundings, such as an office building or construction site. This includes factors like air quality, noise levels, and additional amenities provided by the employer, such as childcare services, coffee provisions, or parking facilities.Beyond that, the importance of the work environment in influencing employee’s productivity has received a lot of attention in the field of company management nowadays (Al-Harbi, 2018; Podsakoff et al., 2017). While the physical, social, and psychological components of an employee's work environment can affect their attitudes, behaviors, and perceptions in an organization (Hackman & Oldham, 2016; Spector, 2018). Therefore, it is essential to comprehend work environment dynamics and how they affect employee’s productivity if an organization is to succeed and last. Furthermore, according to World Bank (2021), Cameroon, a multicultural and culturally rich nation in Central Africa, has seen tremendous economic expansion and industrialization. However, in the midst of this evolution, Cameroonian corporate organizations must optimize worker productivity to stay competitive in both local and international markets (Mbetbo & Asongu, 2020).The work environment plays a pivotal role in influencing employee productivity across industries and sectors (Parker et al., 2017). Factors such as workplace design, organizational culture, leadership style, communication channels, workload, and job autonomy can significantly impact employee motivation, engagement, and performance (Hackman & Oldham, 1976; Agho et al., 2016). Notwithstanding the acknowledgement of the significance of productivity, numerous establishments in Cameroon still struggle with poor levels of productivity, impeding their expansion and financial success (Fouda et al., 2019). The complex relationship between the work environment and employee productivity has been highlighted by earlier studies undertaken in a variety of international contexts (Alfes et al., 2018; Baillien et al., 2016). Only a small number of empirical research, meanwhile, have explicitly looked at this link in the setting of Cameroonian corporate organizations. Therefore, a survey will be conducted in order to assess work environment as a predictor of employee productivity in business organizations in Cameroon.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

In business organizations in Cameroon, employee productivity is crucial for achieving organizational goals and maintaining competitiveness in the marketplace. However, despite its significance, many organizations in Cameroon struggle with low levels of productivity among their workforce. One potential factor influencing employee productivity is the work environment within these organizations. Furthermore, the work environment encompasses various factors, including physical, social, and psychological aspects, which can either enhance or impede employee performance. Also, employees encounter various challenges related to their workplace environment, including limited training, supervision, and teamwork support (Fotabong, 2022). The work environment significantly impacts employees' engagement and commitment to the organization. Therefore, if the work atmosphere is not conducive, it poses a significant threat to the company's productivity (Fotabong, 2022). Also, disengaged employees, affected by a poor work environment, often produce subpar results due to factors like noise, which can cause discomfort.

Given the aforementioned challenges in the workplace environment, particularly in business organizations in Kumba, such as the lack of training and development, the researcher aims to investigate how the environment affects employee performance (Akume & Annicet, 2017). However, there is a shortage of research on how these working circumstances affect productivity among employees in business organizations in Kumba, Cameroon. Thus, it is in the light of these that the study seeks to assess work environment as a predictor of employee productivity in business organizations in Cameroon.
