A CRITICAL EXAMINATION OF THE IMPACT EMPLOYEE RELATIONS ON ORGANIZATIONAL PERFORMANCE: A CASE STUDY OF BARAKAT CAMEROON

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Employees play a crucial role in the success and productivity of any organization, forming a vital part of its capacity for enhanced productivity. The term "employee relations" encompasses the interactions and dynamics among employees within the organization and between employees and management (Ugoani, 2020). It covers various aspects such as communication, teamwork, conflict resolution, and the overall workplace atmosphere. According to Elendu (2018), it is a means of improving organizational performance, with the quality of workplace relationships significantly influencing motivation and performance levels.

Additionally, the degree to which employees engage with the organization, especially with their colleagues, profoundly impacts error rates, innovation, collaboration, absenteeism, and ultimately, their tenure. Employee relations contributes through activities like employee recognition, policy development, problem-solving, and dispute resolution. Similarly, it involves managing employment practices, terms and conditions, providing employees with a voice, and communication.

Furthermore, positive relationships between employees and management are crucial throughout different stages, including recruitment, employment tenure, and separation. Organizations rely on a positive relationship between employers and employees to achieve their objectives effectively. Therefore, it's essential for managers to establish and maintain positive relationships with their employees, as these relationships impact performance, job satisfaction, and outcomes during separation. While good relationships between employers and employees motivate better performance and results, and human relations play a critical role in managing human resources in today's competitive business environment. Also, job satisfaction is attained through positive working relationships between labor and management. On the otherhand, organizational performance, according to Cassio (2018), is the standard by which business outcomes and quality are evaluated. Many corporations keep their devoted staff members on staff and include them in many ventures. Also, according to research done by the Harvard Business Review (HBR), employee engagement is crucial to an organization's overall performance. Of those surveyed, 71% agreed that this is one of the most important practices. However, a variety of factors impact employee relations, and consequently, the company's organizational effectiveness. For instance, management styles, which, along with other elements and the actual work environment, can have a favorable or unfavorable impact on employees' performance inside the organization. While organizations may have competent, qualified, and motivated employees, a lack of peace and harmony in the workplace can jeopardize their performance. Nevertheless, establishing a positive and supportive work environment can lead to improved performance, heightened job satisfaction, and various other positive outcomes benefiting both employees and the organization.  Therefore, a survey will be conducted in order to critically examine the impact employee relations on organizational performance: a case study of Barakat Cameroon.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

According to Bulińska-Stangrecka & Bagieńska(2021), employee relations is a comprehensive concept encompassing a wide range of subjects, including negotiations, collective bargaining, and compliance with employment laws, as well as contemporary issues like diversity management, equal opportunities, and promoting work-life balance. It involves the implementation of procedures and programs aimed at ensuring the satisfaction and productivity of employees. Despite its critical role in human resource management and its significant impact on both employee performance and organizational success, some companies in Cameroon appear to overlook employee relations, failing to prioritize it adequately. As a result, these organizations encounter difficulties in establishing and maintaining effective employee relations, leading to unnecessary conflicts that detrimentally affect their overall performance. The prevalence of poor relations between employers and employees poses a significant challenge for organizations operating in both global and local markets.
