THE ROLE OF KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT ON THE COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE OF FOOD AND BEVERAGE FIRMS IN DOUALA, CAMEROON

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background Of The Study

The manufacturing sector is an integral component in the evolution and progress of economies on a global scale. Professionals have expressed concerns regarding the performance of business organizations on a global scale, specifically in the manufacturing sector of the majority of economies. Nevertheless, these concerns are debatable due to the manufacturing industry's increasingly vital position in the global economy. Employees are the assets, and knowledge has grown to be a significant source of wealth. Effective knowledge management is a critical concern that affects both organizations and individuals (Wang and Wu, 2021). Olja et al. (2018) posit that organizations predicated on labor and capital are progressively being supplanted by those founded on knowledge capabilities, as their success and continued existence are contingent upon the development of novel, inventive, and superior products and services.

Knowledge possessed by organizations is vast and dispersed across innumerable organized and unorganized sources. Knowledge acquisition is accelerating due to the fact that technology facilitates the rapid exchange of data. The ability to improve operational procedures and introduce novel products and services to the market more quickly and affordably is contingent upon the generation, distribution, implementation, and conversion of knowledge (Abbas and Lagraa, 2019). Numerous organizations are exerting considerable effort to improve the efficiency of their knowledge management implementation (Yang and Chen, 2019). Knowledge management is increasingly recognized in the business community as a strategic resource that provides greater likelihood of competitive advantage for an organization (Andrej, 2022). Furthermore, it serves as a critical instrument that steers the economy towards a favorable trajectory and promotes relations between manufacturing organizations and the global community (Faluyi, 2018; Kambey et al., 2018).

In order to maintain competitive advantage, innovation, and growth, organizations are typically obligated to effectively manage knowledge. However, the implementation of knowledge management systems in Cameroonia's food and beverage manufacturing companies has become an intricate and thought-provoking undertaking in recent years (Faluyi, 2018). As the demand for expansion increases, optimism regarding a resolution is communicated via knowledge management that fosters innovation. The facilitation of innovation through knowledge management undoubtedly contributes to improved organizational performance (Abbas and Lagraa, 2019). Constant performance is a priority for many organizations because it is the only means by which they can advance and expand. According to Yang and Chen (2019), in order to achieve success, an organization must establish an atmosphere that combines knowledge management with organization performance in order to facilitate knowledge creation, sharing, application, and conversion.

Numerous Cameroonian food and beverage manufacturing companies are confronted with a high rate of failure attributable to enormous financial losses, ineffective management, and financial constraints (Nwonyuku, 2023). These may be ascribed to inadequate knowledge management strategies implemented by both the employees and the organization. Consequently, sustaining business operations for a number of these organizations requires an exceedingly high volume of contributions. In light of these prevailing challenges, knowledge management has emerged as a critical component for contemporary organizations to thrive in terms of performance (Chawla and Joshi, 2019).

Thus, this work explores the the role of knowledge management on the competitive advantage of food and beverage firms in Douala, Cameroon.

1.2 Statement Of The Problem

In the contemporary knowledge economy, organizations are increasingly relying on knowledge and skill management to ensure their survival and prosperity. As a result, knowledge management has gained recognition as a strategic instrument that can confer competitive advantage, sustain long-term market success, and yield performance-related benefits for organizations, including return on investment and other similar metrics. Although knowledge management has had a significant influence on the competitive advantage of food and beverage companies in Cameroon, certain obstacles persist. One such challenge is the inadequate implementation, sharing, conversion, and utilization of knowledge strategies between employees and customers, which fails to present a favorable image for the organization. This predicament has long been prevalent in the food and beverage sector. Adebisi and Abatunde (2022) posit that the food and beverage sectors in Cameroon are confronted with the predicament of consumer scarcity, which can be attributed to inadequate knowledge management practices within the establishment. The lack of knowledge production, as stated by Didii (2018), is one of the most significant challenges confronting the economy of Cameroon. The issue became more apparent as a result of globalization and its associated phenomena. Cameroon's manufacturing sector is on the verge of disintegration, and a significant number of workers may be laid off. Furthermore, Cameroon has become a dumping ground for foreign products of all types (Anwarul et al., 2019). Anwarul et al. (2019) assert that certain commodities and services produced by the manufacturing sector in Cameroon are unable to effectively compete on an international stage with products originating from developed nations, particularly Europe and America. In Cameroon, food and beverage manufacturing companies do not place a significant emphasis on the development of novel innovations (Adebisi and Babatunde, 2022). As a result, strategic innovation via the capacity to generate knowledge is required; this is an essential element for industrial development.

Therefore this study tends to examine the role of knowledge management on the competitive advantage of food and beverage firms in Douala, Cameroon.
