AN ASSESSMENT OF RELIGIOUS DIVERSITY AND ITS INTERSECTION WITH POLITICS IN CAMEROON

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

The nation of Cameroon, located in the region of Central Africa, is well recognised for its abundant cultural and religious heterogeneity. Cameroon, with its diversified population consisting of many ethnic groups and religious connections, serves as a representative example of Africa's varied religious environment. According to Bedoya, Juan, and Simon (2020), the religious landscape in Cameroon is characterised by a diverse range of beliefs and practices. These include Christianity, which encompasses both Catholicism and Protestantism, Islam, Indigenous African traditions, and several other minority faiths. The influence of religion is of considerable importance in shaping the social, cultural, and political structure of Cameroonian society. It has an impact on both personal and group identities, moulds societal standards and principles, and holds a crucial position in political interactions. The convergence of religion and politics in Cameroon is an intricate and diverse phenomena that needs comprehensive examination. The historical trajectory of the interplay between religion and politics in Cameroon has been characterised by a combination of collaborative efforts and strained dynamics (Astor, Marian, & Mar, 2017). Cultural establishments often function as arenas for political involvement and mobilisation, hence playing a role in the development of political ideology, parties, and movements. Simultaneously, the presence of religious plurality has sometimes served as a catalyst for fragmentation and opposition, particularly within a socio-political framework marked by ethnic and regional animosities (Koedam, 2022).

Furthermore, the political environment in Cameroon has been shaped by the interaction of many religious factions, each with distinct interests, values, and goals. Comprehending the country's governance structures, election processes, policy-making procedures, and larger socio-political trends requires a thorough understanding of how religion dynamics connect with politics (Maxwell, 2019).

Although religious diversity has a crucial role in influencing political dynamics in Cameroon, there is a lack of thorough research that examines this intricate link. The current body of study tends to concentrate on individual facets of either religion or politics, often neglecting the complex interrelationships between these two realms.

Hence, the primary objective of this research is to address this knowledge deficit by conducting a thorough evaluation of the extent of religious variety and its interplay with political dynamics in Cameroon (Reeser, 2019). This project aims to explore the intricate dynamics between religion and political processes in Cameroon by using an interdisciplinary approach that incorporates perspectives from political science, sociology, anthropology, and religious studies. This research aims to investigate the multifaceted nature of the correlation between religion and politics in Cameroon by using empirical analytic methods such as surveys, interviews, and case studies (Shady, 2022). This study aims to analyse the influence exerted by religious organisations, leaders, and beliefs on the formation of political attitudes, behaviours, and results. Moreover, the research will examine the manner in which political players interact with religious variety in order to promote their objectives, traverse intricate socio-cultural dynamics, and garner support. This project seeks to enhance academic understanding and public conversation on the intricate relationship between religion and politics in Cameroon by illuminating these dynamics. Furthermore, it aims to provide valuable perspectives that may guide policy-making endeavours focused on promoting religious tolerance, social unity, and democratic governance within the nation. The primary objective of this research is to promote well-informed communication and productive involvement in matters pertaining to the intersection of religion, politics, and society in Cameroon.

1.2 Statement of the problem

The presence of religious variety has been widely recognised as an essential element of Cameroon's social structure, characterised by the coexistence of several religions inside its territorial boundaries. Nevertheless, the intricate and inadequately understood connection between religious diversity and political dynamics persists (Rovny & Jonathan, 2019). Religious connections often overlap with political goals, so exerting potential influence on governance, legislation, and societal cohesiveness, despite the constitutional protections that safeguard freedom of religion and the separation of church and state. Hence, the study will assess religious diversity and its intersection with politics in Cameroon.

1.3 Objective of the study

The broad objective of the study is to assess religious diversity and its intersection with politics in Cameroon. The specific objectives is as follows

There are several research methodologies appropriate for answering the research questions. The type of research methodology used in this research to gather data and relevant information is the historical research and the study will adopt descriptive method of data collection. This will involve the collection of materials from secondary sources, such as books, journal articles, magazines, internet sources, international and national conference proceedings, published and unpublished articles.
