IMPACT OF MOTIVATION ON EMPLOYEES PERFORMANCE IN THE CAMEROONIAN BANKING SECTOR: A CASE STUDY OF AFRILAND FIRST BANK, CAMEROON

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

 Background of the study

Motivation plays a crucial role in enhancing the performance and productivity of both individual employees and the overall workforce within a company or institution. Organizations often prioritize various motivational techniques aimed at consistently fostering high levels of productivity among their employees. According to Robbins & Decenzo(2021), motivation can be defined as the forces that energize, direct, and sustain an individual's effort, serving as a significant determinant of human behavior that leads to the accomplishment of goals and objectives. Similarly, Elizabeth (2019) defines motivation as a guiding principle and driving force that propels individuals to focus on specific paths to achieve predetermined goals. Essentially, motivation creates an environment conducive to optimal performance. It is a key factor influencing the quality of work, boosting performance, and maintaining a harmonious workflow throughout the organization. Furthermore, motivated employees contribute to staff retention, company loyalty, and overall business growth and development (Jishi, 2018).  Armstrong (2020) distinguishes between two types of motivation: intrinsic and extrinsic. Intrinsic motivation is fueled by an employee's internal drive, while extrinsic motivation involves external factors initiated by organizations to encourage desired actions aligned with organizational goals. Understanding what motivates individual employees in an organization is crucial, as motivations can vary from recognition and praise to cash incentives and financial bonuses. Additionally, the impact of employee motivation extends to customer satisfaction in sectors like banking (Petcharack, 2022). However, while different employees are driven by diverse motivations, such as recognition, certificates, praise, or financial incentives, managers must not make assumptions but comprehend the unique motivators for each employee. Moreover, managers bear the responsibility of creating a conducive environment for improved performance, ensuring adequate working conditions, and providing attractive welfare packages (Akanbi, 2019). Recognizing the significance of rewards like competitive salaries, favorable working conditions, promotions, training opportunities, and other incentives inspires employees to enhance their capacity for performance, thereby contributing to the achievement of organizational goals.

In essence, the longevity of organizations and the realization of set goals hinge on the motivation of employees. While individual abilities, skills, and knowledge are essential, they alone may not suffice without motivation. Employee performance is not solely dependent on inherent attributes but is significantly influenced by the motivation they possess (Abbegleen, 2021). Thus, activating, training, developing, and, above all, motivating human resources are imperative for organizations to realize their goals. The aim of this study therefore, is to examine the impact of motivation on employees performance in the Cameroonian banking sector: A case study of Afriland First Bank, Cameroon

 1.2 Statement of the Problem

Employee motivation involves various factors, including the nature of assigned tasks, additional perks such as extended vacations, employer-provided amenities like housing, and financial support for children's education, along with the provision of health insurance for employees and their families. However, in recent times, there has been a growing emphasis on motivating employees through the organization of enjoyable and recreational off-site events. These events serve as opportunities for employees to unwind and participate in stress-relieving activities, contributing to a positive work environment. Additionally, the banking sector, along with other firms in the industry, faces challenges in maintaining and motivating their employees. The demanding nature of the job, responsibility for substantial financial transactions, and enforced quotas are common stressors. Employee retention becomes a significant concern, with many leaving their positions due to perceived or actual deficiencies in motivation from their workplace. Key issues include inadequate compensation, an inconsistent promotion system, and a lack of acknowledgment for employee contributions, all of which contribute to lowering morale and, subsequently, impacting performance. Moreover, factors such as extended working hours, high stress levels, and insufficient remuneration have been identified as major contributors to high employee turnover within banks (PWC, 2019). The absence of proper motivation not only leads to financial losses but also results in negative outcomes such as increased employee turnover, a diminished work ethic, reduced output levels, and ultimately, lower profitability for the organization. Addressing these motivational challenges is crucial for fostering a positive work environment and ensuring the long-term success and sustainability of the business. Thus, it is in the light of these that the study seeks to examine the impact of motivation on employees performance in the Cameroonian banking sector: A case study of Afriland First Bank, Cameroon
