CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF STUDY
Power is required to develop and execute the activities involved in agricultural production. In every part of the world power supply is almost directly proportional to agricultural production.
In view of the above facts, an appraisal of farm power sources available to Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State was nursed. An articulated evaluation will help to highlight power needs of agricultural activities that will lead to improved food and fibre production.
1.2 STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
Very little or no work had been earlier on this study in the local government area, thus documentation on farm power sources and utilization in the local government area has been minimal. This study therefore attempts to solve this problem by identifying, analyzing and appraising. The various sources of farm power available and how they are put to use in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State.
1.3 OBJECTIVE OF STUDY
This work has the objective of providing valid in formation on the different farm power sources available in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State.
Secondly, to make known the best possible way of utilizing or applying available power.
Thirdly, it is meant to help determine the best application of available power in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State at a minimal cost.
The study wills also increasing agricultural production along side with the processing of agricultural produce through the efficient utilization of available power.
1.4 JUSTIFICATION OF STUDY
i. To determine the amount of energy available from the various farm power sources with a view to suggesting ways of improvement.
ii.To identify the stages agricultural or other human activities where the farm sources are mostly utilized and to prepared ground for further research.
1.5 Research Qestion
1. what is the demographic distribution of the farmers?
2. What are the sources of farm power in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State ?
3. What is the Level of Utilization of the available farm power in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State ?
4. what is the best application of available power in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State at a minimal cost?
1.6 Scope of the study
This research work is on farm power sources and utilization in Enugu state, using Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State as a case study. The study could not cover other Local Governments due to in-adequate disclosures in the farm power sources and utilization from the farmers.
1.7 Limitation of the study
In the process of carrying out this study, the following problems were encountered by the researcher, this includes:
- Time Factor:- The time within which this work must be completed and submitted for appraisal stood as an impediment to this project work.
- Financial Resources:- Due to lack of finance at the disposal of the researcher, affected the quality of this work, cause my sponsor(parents) prefers to spend money on my younger once admission into the University recently (2019/2020) academic session) rather than devoting huge financial resources on this study that will be of economic and academic importance in years to come.
1.8 Definition of terms
For the clarity of this study, some basic terms have to be defined in the context, they are used in this study, they are:
Farm Power
Farm power is used for operating different types of machinery like tillage, planting, plant protection, harvesting and threshing machinery, and other stationary jobs like operating irrigation equipment, threshers/ sellers/ cleaners/ graders
Power Source
The source is the origin of incoming electricity. In most cases, the electricity source is an outlet, battery, or generator. The power supply works to convert the power from the source into the correct format and voltage
Utilisation
the act of using; "he warned against the use of narcotic drugs"; "skilled in the utilization of computers" usage, use, utilization, exercise, employment. activity - any specific behavior; "they avoided all recreational activity
